Facts About Leperdy

Leperdy is a leopard gecko from the desert. Here are some random facts about him. He is made to survive extreme heat in the desert. When he eats, instead of his belly getting fat, his tail gets fat. The tail getting fat allows him to live longer without eating because he uses the energy stored in his tail. Some people think that leopard geckos have scales, but in truth they have skin! It's kind of bumpy and once it's shed, it doesn't have the same pattern that it had on the gecko. The only pattern left on the shed skin is lines of bumps. All around the lines of bumps there are tiny bumps that surround the whole skin, and completely fill the surface. All together, the leopard gecko is an extremely interesting specimen.

Two Excellent Books

I read The Castle in the Attic. I also read Loch. Loch was excellent. The Castle in the Attic was also an excellent book. Loch is by Paul Zindel. The Castle in the Attic is by Elizabeth Winthrop.

Loch is about a herd of prehistoric sea monsters called plesiosaurs. The plesiosaurs are endangered because a man named Cavenger is trying to kill the herd and get rich by taking them into the museum. Three kids are trying to stop them - Sarah, Loch and Zaidee. Only their father knows how to open the trap, called a grid, that holds the sea monsters in the lake. I definitely recommend this book.

Castle in the Attic is about a portal to a medieval world where there is a wizard waiting for battle, and a dragon that's guarding the gates. In front of the portal there is a finger-high knight called the Silver Knight who used to own the castle that the wizard has taken over. His father was the king who was killed by the wizard. The Silver Knight returns with a boy to defeat the wizard. Before they get out of the forest, they see many images of food and stuff they love but this is only to get them off the trail. The rest of this book you should read yourself, but I highly recommend it.

A Visit To The Reef

We went to Coral World. We saw sharks. We saw stingrays. We saw fish. We saw turtles. We saw iguanas. It was fun!

We went to Coral World. We fed iguanas lettuce. I touched a starfish. We went into an underwater observatory. We saw multicolored tortoises sunbathing. It was fun. It was cool.

Lizards and Geckos

A gecko's cousin is a lizard. Lizards live in warm climates. The flying gecko has webbing that allows it to glide from tree to tree. It lives in rain forests. It is a reptile which means it lays eggs instead of giving live birth. It eats bugs. It lays eggs, three at a time.

I saw a lizard today. It was tan with diamond-shaped spots on its back. It was about the size of your middle finger. He was hanging out at the entrance of Coral World. I caught him, but I let him go quickly. It is cute. It was probably a Crested Anole.


I love lizards and geckos.

Comparing Two Books

First, I will talk about each book individually. I will start with Water Horse by Dick King-Smith.

Water Horse is the best book ever. It is about a pair of siblings, Angus and Kirstie, who find an egg by a bay in Scotland and hatch it into a water horse that they name Crusoe. Now the water horse goes through different homes. First, he lived in the bathtub, believe it or not. Second, he moves to a goldfish pond. Third, he moves to a lake. Finally, he goes into a really huge lake.

The central conflict in this book is that Crusoe eats all the food in the lake so that he needs to move to a bigger home, but he can't be seen. The kids, and some of their family, are afraid that if the water horse is seen he will be put in a zoo or speared! Pum, pum, pum, pummmm....

Next, I will talk about Whales On Stilts! by M. T. Anderson.

This is a very bad book, except for accidental laughter. If you read it, you will be wishing you never read it. Boys won't like it because most of main characters are girls.

The main characters are three kids: Lilly, Katie, and Jasper. They live in a town called Horror Hollow that is attacked by whales on stilts with laser beam eyes. The whales attack because they are under the control of a scientist who wants to take over the world.

The central conflict of this story is that the kids have to save the town because no one believes them about the whales.

Comparing The Books

Both books are fantasy stories with water animals that breathe air but live in water. In both books, the kids are trying to save something. In Water Horse, they are trying to save Crusoe. And in Whales On Stilts!, the kids are trying to save the town.

Here are the differences. One is funny, and the other is not. One is a good book, and the other is not. One has an evil person, and the other does not. The big difference in these books is that in Water Horse, the parents help the kids. And in Whales On Stilts! the parents don't help at all.

Alex: Yes, I liked them very much.

Mom: How long did you take to read the series?

Alex: Three days.

Mom: How did you read them so fast?

Alex: They are very short, but they are the funnest books you would ever imagine.

Mom: Can you tell me about one exciting scene?

Alex: When Jared and his sister Mallory were fighting five common goblins. Mallory had a fencing sword and Jared had nothing. Jared was almost caught. They were fighting for their life because goblins would eat them.

Mom: Is there a scene in the books that should go in the movie, and why?

Alex: Yes. Jared, Mallory, and Simon were on the poison ivy trying to get a hobgoblin out of a hung cage. This should go into the movie because it is one of the most exciting scenes.
